When Janina and Colin reached out about a maternity couple’s session, I was genuinely so excited. They’re from Frankfurt and wanted to spend one of their last trips as a couple, camping in their van in the beautiful Allgäu, before the baby arrives. And they wanted to do more than just live those “golden-jar” moments, they wanted to keep them forever. Exactly my kind of thing.

Even on our first call, I could tell it was a perfect fit. You might know that feeling: you talk for a few minutes and instantly everything feels easy. Like you can relax without worrying about how you’re “supposed” to look. And that’s exactly how it turned out: a maternity session that felt like a really great day out, just with photos that last.

Meet-Up at Schwansee: A Natural Setting with Castle Neuschwanstein Nearby

We met in Schwangau at beautiful Schwansee. Mountains in the background, Neuschwanstein Castle close by, crystal-clear water, and that calm shoreline vibe. Schwansee is one of those locations that instantly draws you in. You don’t have to do much. You’re there, you’re together, and the scenery carries you.

The session flew by, because it wasn’t about posing, it was about moments. About looks that linger. About hands that find each other without thinking. About that feeling of standing right on the edge of something: still the two of you, but already stepping into the next chapter.

The Dock at Schwansee: A Dream Backdrop

The view from the dock at Schwansee is honestly unreal. Especially when the light hits just right, it creates an atmosphere that feels modern and timeless at the same time. You get open space, mountains, water, and right in the middle, the two of you. And that’s what makes maternity photos so powerful: you’re not “in front of a backdrop,” you’re part of it.

And then there was that moment you can’t plan. Some swimmers jumped into the lake and splashed Janina and Colin. With the heat that day, it was more of a welcome cool-down than a problem. Those are the moments that make photos feel alive. It shows you’re not standing there perfectly polished while life happens, life is happening, and you’re laughing anyway. Or maybe because of it.

Hay fever, blooming grass, and still the perfect moment

We also powered through a few little allergy flare-ups. Yep, we really hit the exact time when the grasses were in full bloom. If you know, you know: you’re loving the scenery and thinking, “of course it’s happening right now.” But that’s part of real life, too. With me, there’s no pressure for everything to be perfect. We adjust the flow, take short breaks, switch spots, and keep things feeling easy.

And in the end, it’s often those real little details that make you smile later. Because you remember: it was warm. It was a little wild. It was our vacation. And we didn’t let anything take it away from us.

Your Camper Van as a Backdrop: Your Home on the Road in Your Photos

At the end of their maternity session, I got to capture some especially meaningful memories for them. We parked their beloved home-on-wheels, their camper van, right in front of the mountain backdrop. And suddenly, it turned from a shoot into a story: your freedom, your connection, your excitement. You get images that aren’t just beautiful, they say something about who you are.

That’s what a maternity session can look like, too. Not just a dress and a bump in the spotlight, but your lifestyle. Your way of traveling. Your way of enjoying time as a couple. It was probably one of their last trips as two, and I’m already excited to see what adventures they’ll have as three.
